What is School to a Child?

What is school to a child?

It may be a refuge, a safe place, a warm place.

It may be the one decent meal in a day.

It might very well be the one constant in their life.

It may be a big place, an overwhelming place, a confusing place, where a familiar face makes all the difference.

It might be the one place where someone cares, notices.

It may feel like a factory, a giant maze, a prison.

It may feel like a day at school takes forever - endless boredom and tedium, until recess of course.

It may not feel safe.

It might feel very lonely….

IT IS TEACHERS WHO MAKE A SCHOOL!

What are you the teacher to a child?

You may be the one constant in their life.

You may be the stability and safety they unconsciously depend on.

You may be the one person in their life who really sees them.

You may be the spark of their natural genius.

You may be the only person in the world who has ever given them an encouraging nudge.

A school is nothing without you the teacher.

Constancy, stability, safety, warmth, recognition, humanity, encouragement, firmness, kindness, love, honor, respect, understanding, consideration, care…

Not… the oh so many things that simply don’t belong and have nothing to do with human education.

What is school to a child?

You’re the school! Make a difference. Make it count. Make it human!
