51. Together Too
Language is one of the beautiful mysteries at the core of human life. Words not only help us to communicate, they also help us to connect – to connect to the vast reservoir of human ideas, knowledge, feelings, emotions, perceptions etc. It’s huge!
Words are like food, in a way. They contain protein, carbohydrates, sugars, fats, vitamins and minerals. They can be fortifying, nourishing, energizing, exhilarating. Words can also deplete, weaken, cause stress…poison.
The saying, that which can hurt can also heal – is especially true of words.
Here is a word which contains extraordinary power. In essence it is one of the most beautiful and paradoxical words in the English language. This simple two lettered pronoun resides at the heart of our humanity. It is a word which expresses what is the same, what is shared. It unifies, it bridges, it reconciles, it ‘betweens’.
It is the word – WE!
It is also a word used to manipulate, to control, to pressure, to add leverage. The word ‘we’ can incite, inspire, galvanize, moralize, polarize… It is a potent tool, one which we would be wise to pay attention to.
‘We’ humans are both individual and collective beings, vitally so. Each one is an ‘I’ and a ‘We’ – inescapably so. How we consciously choose to use these two most powerful words determines much more than is generally realized.
Every single person is born a first time, totally unique, never before, never to be repeated human appearance on the stage of life and Creation. There’s never been another human quite like you! You may bring something to the ‘stage’ that has never been here before, a unique expression of genius, a breakthrough perception – something totally new! It is the promise and possibility of our individuality.
At the same time, everything we do has an effect. Everything we think, feel, perceive…causes something – it cannot not! So our individual responsibility and passionate care must also be for the well-being and welfare of the greater WE, of which and for which, we each are an integral part.
‘WE’ being the greater humanity, nothing less!
