You’ve heard of the “Horse Whisperer” and the popular “Dog Whisperer” – people with the instinctive ability to communicate with animals beyond common understanding. They display an extraordinary sense of empathy and command. The idea of “Whisperers” may be new to our cultural lexicon, but the phenomenon is ancient. Some humans have the gift to be a bridge between species, which is pretty amazing and beautiful if you think about it.
Stories abound from around the world throughout time, often found in folktales or the more esoteric oral traditions of indigenous peoples. What’s really interesting is the rise in these stories now!
For example, the man in South Africa whose connection with elephants was so profound that upon his death, many, many Elephants from the entire region came to where he was buried to mourn and honor him!
There are people with connections to dolphins, birds, lions, wolves, whales, snakes…you name it…almost as if the animals are trying to tell us something!
I met a very kind man in Santa Fe whose house and ranch are quite the menagerie. He himself is a sort of Dr. Dolittle. On one occasion he demonstrated how he could attract hummingbirds to himself by standing, arms outstretched, near a tree where he had a hummingbird feeder. First, one then two or three birds came. I was impressed already. Then he said, “Wait, they’re calling their friends!” Moments later, hummingbirds appeared from all over, landing on his arms, shoulders, hands and head and “parking” there. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Within a few minutes there were at least 50 of these beautiful, delicate creatures perched all over this man, utterly still! I looked over to his wife who smiled back saying – “Yep, he does this! You should see him with the wild antelope down in southern New Mexico!”
What a thing!
Truth is often stranger than fiction. The way things actually are in life often prove to be more astonishing than our wildest inventions.
“Gifted” educators, healers, counselors – are “whisperers” in their own right! They don’t come out from the left-brain domination or control insecurity. Rather they are able to access a natural intelligence that employs more of ourselves, uses both hemispheres of the brain, higher instinct and higher emotion. They are able to communicate, to connect with other humans (especially children) at a deeper level.
This is a HUGE subject, which goes absolutely everywhere.
The brain in our heads is the most extraordinary computer on this planet. In fact, it could be argued that the human central nervous system is the most advanced piece of organic equipment on earth. It puts the IBM super computer to shame. Its capabilities are astounding and way beyond the perception of conventional science. That being said, there is a warning:
The brain does NOT run your life. It is not designed to “run the show”. Oh it can try and does often, but it is not supposed to be “the boss of you”. Our brains are part of a whole human body facility which importantly includes the electrical life and higher faculties.
You are NOT your brain!
So… you’ve got to be a good “brain whisperer”. Why? Well, the brain’s default training is to survive on top, to not lose face, to remain in control. It will connive, manipulate, wiggle and scheme, procrastinate, distract, divert, let you ‘off the hook’, try to take all the credit, consume attention, sulk and pout when it doesn’t get its way etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!
But who’s in control – you or your brain?
There’s food for thought. Where are ‘you’ in the picture? What are you?
Again, the greater intelligence involves ALL our natural systems and faculties working TOGETHER. The brains (spine and head) are the neuro-electric matrix and bio-chemical dispensary wired into all our organs and systems – meant to be a partner to higher service employed by the higher you for purposes higher than oneself!
So…get to know your brain. “Whisper” it!
Those “gifted” educators, counselors, healers, parents, connectors, integrators, artists and deep listeners – are in many cases, really good “brain whisperers”. They are able to bypass the demanding, all consuming, self-centered, self serving nature of the personal ego/brain partnership.
They can do it because they’ve learned to do it in themselves first!
Many teachers end up exhausted and burned out because their classrooms ‘get the better of them’. Shouting louder and louder does not bring a class into focus. Implementing police-state measures does not win over your students. Emotional blackmail, threats, reward and punishment are not conducive to a healthy learning environment. Excitement and sensational over stimulus are not cures for boredom. These are only brain control tactics.
Better to appeal to the brain’s ‘better angels’ so to speak. It loves to learn, be of service, calculate, analyze, compare, interpret, translate, cognate, imitate, reach, extend, expand, search, discover, delight, arrange and rearrange, problem solve….It wants to help! It wants to be put to work!
